Barry the BeeMaster Barry
is a local beekeeper serving the Greater Victoria area on the southern end of Vancouver Island, BC Canada. He is an accredited Bee Master in the province of British Columbia and BCHPA certified instructor of Beginner's Beekeeping. Barry has been actively keeping bees for more than 15 years throughout the South Islands.

Training is an integral part of the support program we provide to beekeepers of the south islands of British Columbia. We currently offer courses for several aspects of beekeeping. All courses include field experience as well as classroom time. We also provide an on going private consulting service for additional on site training.


Queen Rearing Simplified - ($255.00)

This course is an introduction to queen rearing for the backyard beekeeper. To register for email notification go directly to the on-line registration form.

Course Requirements:

You must have at least 3 years of beekeeping experience and be sufficiently at ease to work live bees with your bare hands.

Course Description:

The course offers participants both theory and practical field experience. Classes are small with a maximum of 9 students. We will work with live bees in the classroom. The course is comprised of 4 class room sessions of 2 1/2 hours each plus two field sessions of 2 hrs for a total of 14 hrs. The class will participate in two different queen rearing techniques. Each student is guaranteed 2 queen cells by the end of the course. It is hoped each student will have sufficient resources to raise additional queens at home during the course.

Course Objective:

This course is intended to develop your understanding and implementation of queen rearing for the backyard beekeeper.

Curriculum:
  • The honeybee society, Honey bee physiology, Queen rearing techniques
  • Time line for the South Islands
  • Preparing the Queen cell building hive, IPM, Bee health
  • Preparing the Queen rearing hive, IPM, Bee health
  • Grafting larvae and raising pupa
  • Mating and assessment
  • Putting it all together
